Others argue that men shouldn’t participate in the debate because they can’t get pregnant, which is true. I suppose on the same basis we could legalize holdups since people keep robbing banks anyway. If a fetus weren’t alive, it wouldn’t have to be killed. That simplifies matters - after all, a society could decide that life begins at 40 - but such arbitrary determinations don’t alter the fact that life is an autonomous process that begins when it begins, and takes us from zygote to old-age pension and beyond, unless an abortionist vacuums it out first. Most supporters of abortion-on-demand refuse to recognize human life in the womb as human life. Such arguments make abortion supporters not so much pro-choice but pro-sober-second-choice. Some pro-choicers, like my old friend and debating partner, the civil libertarian Alan Borovoy, argue that “even if we assumed that personhood begins at conception, why should that ‘person’ have sanctuary in the body of someone who doesn’t want it there?” Well, I suppose, because she put it there in the first place, old friend. Few societies expect a woman to keep her baby if it’s inconvenient for her. ![]() Society interferes with what she proposes to do with someone else’s body. Pro-choicers argue, for instance, that society shouldn’t interfere with what a woman does with her own body.
